Golf: Hage, Prempeh win Head of State Invitational tourney

Sammy Hage and Mary Prempeh, both of the Royal Golf Club in Kumasi, put up exciting performances to win this year’s Head of State Invitational Golf tournament in Kumasi last Saturday.

Playing with handicap of two, Hage scored 39 points to dethrone defending champion, Kweku Ofosuhene, of the Achimota Golf Club.

Mary also did not disappoint. Even playing with a handicap of 12, she was able to brush aside her competitors to win with 38 points in the stableford competition at the Royal Golf Club.

However, the competition will be remembered also for the rare royal touch provided by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and the Okyenhene, Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin II, who got the tournament off with a historic tee-off to thunderous applause by spectators and some competitors at the Royal Golf Club.

The two royals played over two holes in the one-day competition meant for business executives and captains of industries and featured 150 amateur golfers.

Harold Agbenu of the Achimota Golf Club, won the third position on 34 points in the men category A while Daniel Ntim placed second on 35 points.

The men category B was won by young Isaac Asante of the Achimota Club, also known as the ‘next generation’, while Mark Kakraba Ampeh placed second.

In the ladies’ division, Constance Awuni and hard-hitting Leticia Amponsah Mensah were the first and second runners-up, respectively.

Leticia, of the Achimota Club, won the Female Longest Drive prize, while Christopher Mbi won the male version, with Derrick Amoakwah Mensah claiming the men’s Nearest to the Pin.
