Hearts and Olympics fired up as Twellium backs Democracy Cup showdown

Food and beverage company Twellium Ghana Limited has presented packs of Verna Water and energy drinks to Accra Hearts of Oak Sporting Club and Accra Great Olympics Football Club.

The two traditional clubs will clash on September 5 at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, Legon, for bragging rights in the Democracy Cup.

The Democracy Cup, an annual football competition initiated last year by the Speaker of Parliament on behalf of Parliament, is aimed at uniting Ghanaians while encouraging support for the Constitution and the principles of democracy.

At the presentation ceremony yesterday at the Accra Hearts of Oak training grounds in Pobiman, Coach Massoud Didi Dramani expressed gratitude to the Speaker and Parliament for the initiative.

He said Hearts would use the competition as good preparation for the upcoming league season and pledged that his side was determined to win.

“Hearts is preparing feverishly for the league and the Democracy Cup will be a good match for such preparations, and we are going to win it,” he declared.

At the La Town Park, where Accra Great Olympics train, there was similar optimism. Coach Sully Adamu noted that the first-division side would surprise Hearts of Oak. He also thanked Verna Water for the donation.

An official of Twellium Industries, Priscilla Awumey of the Corporate Marketing and Business Development Department, emphasised that the company was committed to supporting the two clubs to ensure a successful competition in honour of democracy.

Launched in 2024, the Democracy Cup forms part of a broader effort to use football as a tool for civic education and national unity. The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin, has championed the concept of leveraging the sport’s popularity to deepen understanding of Ghana’s democratic system.

The match venue was moved from the Accra Sports Stadium to the University of Ghana Stadium to “ensure optimal facilities, security and a premier experience for spectators, players and supporters nationwide.”
