Hearts and Olympics set for epic clash in KGL Group Democracy Cup 2025

The stage is set for a pulsating showdown between city rivals Accra Hearts of Oak and Accra Great Olympics in the second edition of the KGL Group Democracy Cup, scheduled for Friday, August 29, at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The highly anticipated match, launched on Thursday evening by Rt. Hon. Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, promises to reignite one of Ghana’s fiercest football rivalries while celebrating the nation’s democratic spirit.

The stakes are higher this year, as the winning team will earn a coveted spot in a three-club international tournament in May 2026, offering a platform to showcase Ghanaian football on a global stage. Last year’s inaugural final saw Kumasi Asante Kotoko edge out Accra Hearts of Oak 2-1 in a thrilling encounter on July 17, 2024, at the same venue. Hearts, stinging from that defeat, are determined to reclaim glory, while Olympics aim to upset their rivals and secure the prestigious international opportunity.

Speaker Bagbin, in his address at the launch, underscored the unifying power of football in promoting democracy, stating, “You cannot get peace without competition. You cannot get happiness without competition. You cannot get peace without unity, you cannot get happiness without unity.” He expressed confidence in the match’s ability to strengthen national cohesion, adding, “The launch of this second edition is a powerful testament to what we can achieve as a nation when we commit to a shared vision and work together with purpose.”

The clash between Hearts and Olympics, steeped in tradition and passion, is expected to draw thousands of fans. Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga, reflecting on the rivalry, noted, “This year’s match will feature a titanic clash once again, between the two giants of Ghana football, Accra Hearts of Oak and their historic city rivals, Accra Great Olympics.” He highlighted the broader significance of the event, saying, “For democracy, we are doing whatever it takes to project democracy, which is what Ghanaians need.”

Sammi Awuku, speaking on behalf of the Minority Leader, described the match as a celebration of “democracy, unity, and national spirit all rolled into 90 minutes on the pitch.” He urged fans to rally behind both teams, stating, “Whether you’re a fan of Accra Hearts of Oak, Accra Great Olympics, or any other team, this tournament presents a chance to come together, cheering together, and ensure that democracy can be found vibrant and inclusive.”

The Executive Chairman of KGL Group, Mr. Alex Apau Dadey, whose company sponsors the event, emphasized its role in fostering unity, saying, “The KGL Group of Companies remains deeply committed to working alongside national institutions in building a future that is just, united, and full of possibilities for every Ghanaian.” He added, “I am a firm believer that entrepreneurship without philanthropy doesn’t mean anything.”

GFA President Kurt Okraku hyped the match, assuring fans of a spectacle. “The two teams are battle-ready,” he said. “May they give us good football. May they show unity.” He also acknowledged the support of Parliament, noting, “This August house and government have been supportive of Association Football.”

Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, representing the Minister of Sports and Recreation, promised a top-notch playing surface, stating, “The stadium will be perfect for playing so that our stars and our parliamentarians will exhibit great football.” He posed a tantalizing question to fans: “Will it be repeat or revenge?”—a nod to Hearts’ loss to Kotoko last year and their hunger for redemption.

The Clerk to Parliament, Ebenezer A. Djietror, described the Democracy Cup as “more than a football match,” calling it “a legacy project designed to deepen democratic engagement, foster national unity, and promote collaboration.” He added, “Today, as we launch the second edition, we seek to institutionalize this great event, broaden community involvement, and ultimately elevate the Democracy Cup into a regional and continental symbol of democratic cohesion.”

Adding to the excitement, a curtain-raiser will feature a parliamentary team, captained by former Black Stars midfielder Agyemang Badu, facing a Judiciary team led by John Mensah, with both sides boasting five former national stars. Fans can also expect giveaways from MaxBuy, a Man of the Match award, and a raffle for supporters, enhancing the festive atmosphere.

As Accra Hearts of Oak and Accra Great Olympics prepare to lock horns, the KGL Group Democracy Cup 2025 is poised to deliver not only a thrilling football spectacle but also a powerful message of unity and democratic resilience, with the victors earning a chance to shine on the international stage next year.
