‘I am a minister, not the coach’ — Kofi Adams on André Ayew’s Black Stars return

Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddi Adams says a potential return for André Ayew to the Black Stars ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup would not come as a surprise — but stressed that the decision rests entirely with the technical team.

Speaking to Graphic Sports on Monday, March 23, Mr Adams addressed growing public debate over Ayew’s future, while making it clear he would not interfere in selection matters.

“Fortunately, I’m the minister. Unfortunately, I’m not the coach. The coach has the final say on this. If they include him, why not? I won’t be surprised,” he said.

Ghana’s most capped player, Ayew has been a central figure for over a decade, starring in multiple AFCON tournaments and representing the country at the FIFA World Cup.

He was omitted from Ghana’s squad for this month’s international friendlies against Austria and Germany, a decision that has further intensified scrutiny over his place in the team.

Since signing for NAC Breda as a free agent, the former Black Stars captain has made 11 appearances, scoring once. Despite modest returns, sections of the fanbase continue to support his reintegration, pointing to his experience and leadership qualities.

The 36-year-old forward has not featured for the national team since the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire, where Ghana exited at the group stage.

His continued absence has fueled debate, particularly following his recent return to club football in Europe.

Ayew joined NAC Breda after spending six months without a club following his departure from Le Havre. His move has reignited discussions about a possible recall ahead of the next World Cup.
