Norbert Amefu denies involvement in fracas

One of the candidates for the chairmanship of the Greater Accra Taekwondo Association, Master Norbert Amefu, has denied selecting athletes to represent Greater Accra in the ongoing National Sports Festival in Kumasi.

Master Amefu also debunked allegations that he masterminded the chaos which occurred last Saturday and Sunday during the weigh-in at the games village.

Reacting to a publication in last Monday’s edition of the Graphic Sports which implicated him in the fracas, Master Amefu said the impression created was erroneous.

According to him, on August 30, the sector Minister, Isaac Asiamah, had a meeting with him, the Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Robert Sarfo Mensah, and the Acting Greater Accra Regional Sports Director, Edmund Kwame Kpeglo, to deliberate on the selection of taekwondo athletes to represent Greater Accra.

This was occasioned by Mr Sarfo Mensah’s letter directing that an earlier letter by the Greater Accra Sports Directorate which acknowledged receipt and acceptance of taekwondo athletes to represent Greater Accra at the event should be disregarded.

A copy of the letter sighted by the Graphic Sports spelt out clearly taekwondo athletes and officials who would represent Greater Accra in the ongoing competition.

The Minister, according to Master Amefu, then decreed that five athletes each from the two feuding parties should represent Greater Accra, while a permanent solution was sought for the protracted impasse after the games.

However, quite contrary to the Minister’s order, Mr Amefu noted that the other party refused to adhere to the five athletes policy and decided to present 10 athletes at the games.

That move, he explained, was what created the confusion at the all National Sports Festival.
