Rio 2016 Olympics: Ghana still undecided on camp venue

The Chef de Mission for Ghana's 2016 Olympic Games campaign, Chris Essilfie, says the choice of the nation's pre-games camp will be decided by the type of athletes that meet the qualification standards for the games.

According to Mr Essilfie, the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) is yet to settle on a location for a preparation camp ahead of the August 5 games because most of the nation's athletes will only begin the qualification process between February and March.

He was reacting to reports that Ghana had settled on Colombia for camping in an interview with the Graphic Sports.

"It is a very interesting story, this is news to me. Because nothing of that sort has come to the table of the GOC and it hasn't come to the table of the Chef de Mission as well," Mr Essilfie stressed.

"Because, in selecting a pre-games venue, it is critical that you know which sporting disciplines can even go there.

"Look, the fact that you saw a facility in Colombia or wherever doesn't mean that you can send either a boxer or a swimmer to necessarily go there and improve.

“You may find these areas having some facilities but not all of them are good for all the athletes of the various disciplines”, he explained.

Mr Essilfie disclosed that he had scouted several potential camping zones in Brazil last August when he attended the Rio 2016 Chefs de Mission Seminar.

Meanwhile 800 metre runner, Alex Amankwah remains the only Ghanaian athlete to have qualified for the games with several athletes scheduled to participate in their qualifiers in the coming weeks.
