Charles “Hitman” Narh Tetteh produced the biggest victory of his unbeaten career last Saturday night, edging former continental champion Wasiru “Gyata Bi” Mohammed by split decision after 10 ferocious rounds at the Tse Annan Memorial Event Centre in Labadi, Accra.
In a brutal, absorbing main event that delivered on its promise, the 22-year-old survived Mohammed’s feared power and matched his more experienced rival punch for punch to claim a razor-thin verdict at Bishop Boxing Promotions’ inaugural Bishop Box Cup.
Judges May Mensah Akakpo and Erasmus Owoo scored the contest 96-95 and 97-93 respectively for Tetteh, overruling Nathaniel Obeng’s emphatic 98-93 card in favour of Mohammed.
The victory extended Tetteh’s professional record to 14 wins and one draw, including 10 knockouts. Mohammed, a former WBO Africa and WBO Global titleholder, slipped to the second defeat of his 17-fight career, leaving him with 15 victories and 13 stoppages.
From the opening bell, neither man showed any interest in a cautious reconnaissance. Tetteh, a former Best Boxer of the Ghana Professional Boxing League and national super-featherweight champion, struck first and began brightly. Mohammed responded by imposing his power, dragging the contest into the punishing exchanges that appeared to favour him.
Momentum swung repeatedly as both fighters abandoned defence and traded heavy shots at close range. It was high-risk boxing, but also a display of extraordinary resilience: each absorbed punishment that might have ended a lesser fighter’s night.
The sustained aggression made the contest exceptionally difficult to score. Tetteh’s sharper work and early initiative impressed two judges, while Mohammed’s pressure and heavier blows earned him a wide margin on the dissenting card.
When the split decision was announced, an emotional Tetteh dedicated the defining victory of his career to his late brother, who died earlier this year.
He also thanked the President and Chief Executive Officer of Bishop Boxing Promotions, Dr Dave Bishop, for providing the platform, his manager Samuel Agyei of SP Sport Management, the Ghana Boxing Interim Management Committee for sanctioning the contest and his vociferous supporters for driving him through 10 gruelling rounds.
The result capped a memorable night for Bishop Boxing Promotions, staged on the first anniversary of its inaugural event on August 23 last year.
Dr Bishop praised the quality and competitiveness of the card before announcing plans to introduce a stronger international dimension to the promotion’s next event.
Fighters from Nigeria, India and the United States are expected to feature in “Africa Box Live”, scheduled for Ghud Park near Accra Mall on Christmas Day, Friday, December 25, 2026.
“Yesterday’s Bishop Box Cup was a collective triumph for Ghana, showcasing our vibrant boxing talent and proving that Ghanaian boxing deserves international attention,” Dr Bishop said.
The undercard reinforced his assessment, producing several fiercely contested bouts.
George Faho Mensah, the 21-year-old SP Sport prospect, was controversially denied a major victory over experienced Prisons officer Jessie Lartey when their contest ended in a majority draw.
Emmanuel Mawuli and Moses Adjei Selvi fought out another closely contested stalemate in their super-featherweight battle, with the judges returning a split draw.
There was far less uncertainty when national super-lightweight champion Africanus “Africa” Neequaye faced hard-hitting Sunday Adeleye.
Neequaye passed the stern examination emphatically, delivering a composed masterclass to win by unanimous decision.
The judges scored the fight 99-91, 99-90 and 98-92, preserving Neequaye’s unbeaten record and confirming his growing authority in the division.
