‘We don’t need additions’ — Jordan Ayew confident in current Black Stars squad for World Cup
Black Stars captain Jordan Ayew has expressed confidence in the current squad ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting the players who secured qualification have what it takes to perform on football’s biggest stage.
The Black Stars have been drawn in Group L of the tournament, where they will face England national football team, Panama national football team and Croatia national football team at the global showpiece to be hosted across United States, Mexico and Canada.
Speaking in an interview with Adom Sports, Ayew said the core group of players who guided Ghana through the qualifiers had shown enough quality and unity to represent the nation at the tournament.
“I think the players who played during the qualifiers have done extremely well. I don't think we need any additions. I believe we have a good team and, as time goes on, we are improving. We haven't had much time to train together, but the unity is getting better and everything is improving," he said.
Ghana sealed qualification for the tournament with a strong finish to their campaign, recording five victories and a draw in their final six qualifying matches.
Ayew suggested that introducing significant changes to the squad at this stage might not be necessary, though he emphasised that the final decision on player selection rests with the technical team.
“I don't think this is the right time to make changes. But to be honest, on the technical side, the coach will know whom to add or select.
"Whoever is added must be ready to give their all and put on a show," he said.
Ghana will begin their World Cup campaign against Panama in Toronto before facing England and Croatia in what is expected to be one of the closely watched groups of the tournament.
The 2026 edition of the World Cup will be the first to feature 48 teams and will be jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada.
