Young girls in Akyem Akooko benefit from GFA’s women’s football campaign

Young girls in Akyem Akooko in the Eastern Region have benefited from the Ghana Football Association’s (GFA) women’s football promotion drive dubbed “Raising Awareness Campaign” at a workshop.

The event, held last Sunday at the Akyem Akooko Town Park, centred around the promotion of the sport among the girls and to encourage their active participation in different aspects of the football industry.

It was also used to educate the girls on the prevalence and dangers of teenage pregnancy as well as encourage the girls to focus on their education which is the key to success.

Girls aged 11 to 13-years drawn from the Okyeman Girls Football and Cultural Group participated in a series of activities, including football drills, fitness exercises, talent identification, mentoring sessions.

Delegation

A delegation from the GFA, which included Acting Technical Director, Prof. Joseph Mintah, Women’s Football Representative on the Executive Council, Gifty Oware-Mensah, Head of Women's Football Desk, Ama Brobbey-Williams led last Sunday’s project in the Eastern Region.

Others were representative of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Francisca Atuluk and chairman of the Eastern Regional Football Association, Linford Asamoah.

The delegation also engaged in dialogues with community leaders, chiefs and parents to garner support for grassroots participation by the girl child.

The delegation presented items – branded T-shirts, footballs, bags of water and GTA’s talent identification manual to the participants to motivate and equip them for their future endeavours.

Social responsibility

The campaign is in line with the GFA’s corporate social responsibility agenda, which seeks to use football as a tool for positive social change and impact.

It is also part of the implementation of the Women's Football Strategy 2023-2026, a document which outlines the vision, mission, objectives, and action plan of the GFA to develop and promote women’s football.

The “Raising Awareness campaign” had been held in Upper East, Upper West and Northern regions with last Sunday’s edition in the Eastern Region wrapping up a successful year of women’s football development and promotion in the country.

The next phase of the campaign will start next year.
