Cyber Security Authority, Meta forge alliance to tackle cyber threats in Ghana

The Cyber Security Authority (CSA) of Ghana has held a strategic meeting with Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, to deepen collaboration in the fight against cybercrime and enhance digital safety across the country.

The high-level engagement, which took place in Accra, focused on strengthening Ghana’s cybersecurity framework and digital ecosystem through joint initiatives. The Meta delegation was led by Mr Kojo Boakye, Vice President of Public Policy for Africa, the Middle East, and Türkiye.

Key areas discussed included digital literacy, child online protection, cybercrime investigations, impersonation and fraud takedowns, and the development of real-time incident reporting systems. Both parties also stressed the importance of localised public education campaigns to raise awareness of online threats and empower users with the knowledge to protect themselves.

The Director-General of the CSA, Mr Divine Agbeti, described the meeting as a pivotal moment in Ghana’s cyber resilience journey. He underscored the need for tech giants like Meta to work closely with national institutions to address the growing threat of cyberbullying, identity theft, and online fraud.

“Meta and other social media platforms play a critical role in shaping the digital experiences of Ghanaians,” Mr Agbeti said. “We urge Meta to support our mission of creating a safer cyberspace, especially for vulnerable groups like children and the elderly.”

Mr Boakye reaffirmed Meta’s commitment to supporting governments in tackling digital security challenges. He highlighted the company’s efforts to invest in safety tools, content moderation, and user protection mechanisms.

The meeting also explored future avenues for training and capacity building for law enforcement and digital security professionals in Ghana. Both parties agreed on the need for sustained collaboration to improve response times to cyber incidents and ensure accountability on digital platforms.
