WhatsApp to allow tagging of contacts in status updates

WhatsApp is set to introduce a new feature that allows users to mention contacts in their status updates, making the messaging platform more similar to Instagram stories.

The feature, which is now available to some users via the latest WhatsApp beta update for Android (version 2.24.20.3), is being publicly tested after months of development.

This new capability enables users to tag specific contacts in their status updates, sending a direct notification to those mentioned. The feature is designed to make it easier for users to engage with the right people, bringing them directly into conversations through status updates.

To tag a contact, users will see a button in the caption bar while sharing photos and videos in their status.

The tagged contacts will receive a private notification, and other viewers of the status won't see who has been mentioned. The feature also allows tagged contacts to reshare the status update with their own audience through a new reshare button, although the original creator's identity remains hidden.

WhatsApp's introduction of tagging in status updates brings it in line with similar features already seen on Meta’s other platforms like Instagram and Facebook, enhancing user interaction on the app.
