Clean Energy powers upcycling drive at Kantamanto
A new partnership is transforming the way traders and tailors in Kantamanto Market work, replacing polluting generators with clean, reliable energy to drive the growing upcycling movement.
The Revival Earth, a local non-profit that trains young people to turn textile waste into new products, has joined forces with Kofa, Africa’s battery-swapping network, to deliver sustainable power solutions at the bustling market.
A Kofa battery station has been installed within Kantamanto to run sewing machines, lighting, and workshops. The station, which will be managed by The Revival Earth, is expected to ensure that the benefits remain within the community while cutting down on noise and air pollution.
The launch also saw the opening of The Revival Earth’s new Showroom and Atelier, powered entirely by Kofa batteries. Visitors witnessed live demonstrations and the introduction of the Upcycling Club, a creative hub for tailors, designers and traders to exchange skills and ideas.
“Waste is not the end of the story. It can be turned into something useful,” said Yayra David Agbofah, founder of The Revival Earth. “With Kofa’s support, we can power our training and workshops in a way that is sustainable.”
Kofa’s Chief Executive Officer, Erik Nygard, noted that the initiative underscores the vital role of energy in supporting innovation. “Everyone deserves access to safe and reliable energy. This project shows how clean power can support the creativity and hard work already happening in Kantamanto,” he said.
The collaboration will continue over the next year with additional training programmes and community workshops planned, powered by the renewable energy needed to keep the market’s upcycling drive alive.
