Don’t copy blindly

Red carpets have become a signature at most events and have changed the nature of events  significantly over the years. Previously, the only aspect that mattered was the actual show or event but now the red carpet session has become equally important and goes a long way to spice up  the game.

Red carpets present an opportunity for celebs and socialites to show off their stuff and display the latest fashion trends. It also presents an opportunity for known fashion designers to advertise and unknown ones  get some exposure for their brands.

Another reality is that many people actually look forward to pictures from the red carpets in order to make fashion choices.

However, just like many imports and trends adopted into our country, the red carpet is being abused, and to put it bluntly, has become an eyesore sometimes. It appears those who walk the red carpet are in competition to outdo each other with the most outrageous outfits they can lay their hands on.

It is little wonder that in recent times, the miserable excuses for dresses our celebrities wear have become the talking point of the award shows and concerts far overshadowing the actual events.

We urge our celebs to stop making a mockery of themselves and bring some sanity onto red carpet events. Why make a spectacle of yourself when you can use the platform provided to do some good and help build our local brands?

In more advanced entertainment industries, red carpet events are opportunities for celebs to model fashion brands in exchange for some financial rewards so why can’t we do same in our country?

The argument that since those same attires are worn on red carpets in other parts of the world, it’s enough justification to do same here is frankly a clear sign of immaturity.

Remember, copying blindly comes with  repercussions. We have to be aware of the cultural context within which we live and take this into account. Please let us bring some sanity onto our red carpets.
