MTTD clamp down on use of strobe lights, unauthorised sirens in VR

A Team of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) in Ho, in collaboration with the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) have impounded 34 tricycle taxies and 28 vehicles in the municipality for the unauthorised use of strobe lamps and sirens.

All the unapproved lamps were removed and siezed by the team during the exercise, which was carried out in front of the Ho Teaching Hospital last Tuesda.

The offenders were cautioned against the use of such lights.

They were also educated on the dangers associated with the use of the unapproved lights and sensitised to various sections of the Road Traffic Regulations.

Meanwhile, in a similar exercise in front of the Regional Police Headquarters the next day, 18 tricycle operators and one motorbike rider who did not possess valid licences were arrested, and their machines impounded.

“Their details have been recorded, and we will arraign them before court,” the Regional MTTD Commander, Superintendent Benedicta Akpene Ansah, said.

She told the Graphic during the exercise last Tuesday, that data gathered by the police in recent times proved some road accidents were caused by the extremely bright strobe lights, which blinded drivers of vehicles from the opposite direction on the road.

Superintendent Ansah said it was also unlawful for tricycle operators to fix sirens and loud horns onto their machines.

The Regional MTTD Commander affirmed the exercise would be retained and extended to other parts of the region.
