Interior Ministry issues flood alert for Greater Accra as GMet forecasts widespread rain on Monday

Residents of Greater Accra have been urged to remain vigilant after the Ministry of the Interior issued an emergency weather alert warning of possible flooding ahead of moderate rainfall expected early on Monday (July 6, 2026).

In a text message sent to residents on Sunday evening, the ministry warned that moderate rain was likely between 4 a.m. and 7 a.m. on Monday, July 6, with a 40 per cent chance of occurrence.

The alert cautioned that low-lying areas could experience flooding and advised residents to avoid driving or walking through flooded roads while remaining alert to changing weather conditions.

The warning comes as the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) forecast unsettled weather across much of the country over the next 18 hours, with rain and thunderstorms expected to affect parts of the northern, transition and middle sectors on Sunday night.

According to GMet, thunderstorms or rain will continue across sections of northern, transition and middle Ghana into the night, while many other parts of the country are expected to remain mostly cloudy. By Monday morning, slight to moderate rainfall is forecast along the coast and in parts of the middle belt, accompanied by patches of mist or fog over mountainous and forest areas that could reduce visibility during the early hours.

The forecast indicates that coastal communities, including Accra, Kasoa, Cape Coast, Takoradi, Aflao and Anloga, are likely to experience light to moderate rain during the morning. Inland areas are also expected to receive rainfall, although weather conditions are forecast to improve gradually later in the day.

Northern communities, including Ho, Koforidua, Kete Krachi, Atebubu, Ejura, Kintampo, Sunyani, Techiman, Yendi and Tamale, are expected to experience thunderstorms or rain during Sunday evening before conditions become mostly cloudy overnight.

GMet also warned that mist and fog are likely to develop over parts of the forest and mountainous regions, particularly around Kumasi, Obuasi, Tarkwa, Sefwi Bekwai and surrounding communities, potentially affecting visibility for motorists during the Monday morning commute.

Marine conditions are also expected to remain hazardous, with the agency classifying the state of the sea as rough. Fisherfolk, commercial boat operators and others undertaking activities at sea have therefore been advised to exercise caution.

The latest forecast comes at a time when many parts of southern Ghana have experienced intermittent rainfall in recent weeks, heightening concerns about flooding in vulnerable communities. The Ministry of the Interior's alert and GMet's forecast are intended to give residents sufficient time to prepare and take precautionary measures.

Authorities have advised the public to monitor official weather updates, avoid flood-prone areas where possible and exercise caution while travelling during periods of heavy rainfall or poor visibility. Motorists have also been encouraged to reduce speed when driving through rain or fog and to avoid attempting to cross flooded roads.
