Dr Kwame Nkrumah’s vision of unity celebrated, as FESTAC2025 opens in Accra

Ghanaians are being urged to tap into the patriotic spirit and developmental vision of their nation's first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, as the country reflects on his transformative leadership.

This call to action was made during a vibrant cultural event in Accra, "Welcoming Nkrumah – Kente and Calabash," organised by the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) in collaboration with FESTAC Africa.

The event showcased Ghanaian culture, bringing together people from diverse backgrounds to honour Nkrumah's monumental contributions to the nation. 

The CEO of GTA CEO, Maame Efua Houadjeto, noted the importance of drawing inspiration from Nkrumah's legacy, encouraging citizens to rekindle their sense of patriotism and commitment to national progress.

 “Nkrumah’s vision was not just about political independence; it was about creating a self-reliant, united, and prosperous Ghana. As we remember his legacy, we hope that more Ghanaians will embrace his ideals and contribute to the national growth and unity through culture and patriotism.

“Culture is a vital part of who we are as a nation. By promoting our culture and traditions, we can create a unique and compelling narrative that will attract more tourists to Ghana. Tourism is a key driver of economic growth, and it’s crucial that we harness its potential for the benefit of our country,” she stated.

The occasion was to officially open the 2025 FESTAC Africa Renaissance Festival happening now at the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC).

FESTAC Africa Chairman, Engineer Yinka, highlighted the festival's rich history, dating back to the 1960s when newly independent African states sought cultural solidarity.

This year’s festival is equally aimed at promoting African culture, unity, and identity through various lectures and week-long activities.

Among a number of activities to mark the celebration are:

•           Conferences & Summits: Trade, Tourism, Technology, Women ARISE, Youth BOLD Moves

•           Health Screenings: Accessible to all attendees

 

•           Cultural Performances: Nightly shows at Independence Square

•           Sports & Youth Activities: Daily events, including SA vs Zimbabwe Braai Day and Walk4HopeNewspaper delivery service

•           Movies & Documentaries: Daily screenings celebrating African narratives

•           Culinary Experiences: Ghana vs Nigeria Jollof Showdown, Afro-Fusion Runway

•           Black Star Experience: Showcasing Ghana as Africa’s Gateway

About FESTAC Festival

First held in Dakar, Senegal, in 1966, then later in Lagos, Nigeria, in 1977, FESTAC Africa Renaissance Festival didn’t hold for 45 years until its return in 2022 when it was held in Zanzibar.

Since then, the festival which has been a yearly affair has been held in Tanzania (2023), Kenya (2024) with Ghana taking the baton as host this September.
