Ghana mourns Mercy Little Smith, beloved ‘Benyiwaa’ of Efiewura fame  

Ghanaian actress Mercy Little Smith, widely celebrated for her iconic role as ‘Benyiwaa’ in the acclaimed television series Efiewura, has passed away. 

The news of her demise was announced on the Efiewura TV series Facebook page on December 18, 2024, with the poignant message: “RIP Benyiwaa. She left the earth plane yesterday. Bye.”

Mercy Little Smith rose to prominence through her unforgettable portrayal of Benyiwaa, the witty and resilient wife of Judge Koboo, in Efiewura. Her performance captivated audiences across Ghana and cemented her legacy as one of the most memorable characters in local television drama.  

Since the announcement, tributes have poured in from fans, colleagues, and the general public, all mourning the loss of a talented actress who brought joy and laughter to countless households.  

Kwame Dzokoto, her co-star on Efiewura, took to Facebook to pay an emotional tribute, revealing the extent of her recent health struggles and the support she received.  

“I have lost my dear on the screen. You fought so well over this health condition, and God knows what’s best for you at this time. Life is like a stage play, and you’ve played your part,” Dzokoto wrote. 

He also disclosed the involvement of former President John Dramani Mahama, describing how the President-elect invested significantly in Smith’s medical care in an effort to save her life.  

“I don’t know how to break this story to the President-elect... John Dramani Mahama. I know he will be in shock with this news. He wanted you to overcome it. When he heard the news about your condition, he invested so much in your bills, just for you to survive. We are shattered,” Dzokoto added.
