Kenkubui is turning to Borborbor fusion for his third single, Mɔzɔlawo (Travellers), a reflective song about the shortness of life.
The song was released on Tuesday, September 15, and marks Kenkubui’s first attempt at Borborbor Fusion, a genre he says has helped him discover a side of himself he had not fully explored.
According to him, Mɔzɔlawo speaks about the lives people live and how quickly they pass through the world.
“No one is on earth forever. It is a sensitive topic most people are not willing to talk about, but the truth, is we are all just passing through,” he said.
Kenkubui believes the song’s message should encourage people to make better use of their time by choosing peace and unity over hatred and envy.
He explained that the song is not meant to frighten listeners or focus on death, but to remind them of the importance of how they treat others while they are alive.
“Someone saw my flyer and asked if it was a good morning message. It scared him, but I told him it is not a song about death. It is a reminder that no one is here forever, so we should leave behind hate, envy, greed and selfishness,” he stated.
For Kenkubui, the decision to explore Borborbor Fusion is also a personal one because of its connection to his Ewe roots.
“Borborbor Fusion is a form of traditional music that connects me to the roots of my culture. I feel it is a spiritual journey I cannot run away from. It has always been within me, and I’m happy I’ve finally found a space where I can express it,” he said.
Mɔzɔlawo also represents a new stage in Kenkubui’s musical journey. He says he is becoming less concerned about simply getting attention and more interested in using his music to communicate his own truth.
“I’ve moved from wanting to be heard to wanting to be understood. My focus here isn’t a hit song. It is my truth and the realities of life that need to be heard,” he said.
