Knii Lante, others celebrate Osibisa

Information about the event went round mainly by word of mouth but attendance was fairly good at the King Solomon Gardens at Dansoman in Accra last Sunday, August 30, when Knii Lante’s Deluge Entertainment presented the second edition of its  Live Covers show.

The night was dedicated to Osibisa and the artistes on parade, backed by the Big Hills band, soared with reggae versions of several songs made popular by the world-famous Afro-rock band led by Teddy Osei.

The monthly Live Covers programme was initiated last July to, as Knii Lante put it, “promote reggae and rebrand it.”

The first edition treated music by the late Michael Jackson and it went well. The night for Osibisa, however, was a mighty blast with Knii Lante, Ras Boomba, Ruth Williams, Habiba, Black I, Xali and AJ Lyricz in the house to acknowledge the great influence Osibisa has had around the world.

“We give thanks to Osibisa for paving the way and we follow.” That was how Knii Lante got proceedings off on a very entertaining evening full of cheer, drive and tight grooves.

Between the artistes, they performed Osibisa tracks such as Welcome Home, Sunshine Day, Adwoa, Celebration, Dance The Body Music, Superfly Man, Coffee Song and Woyaya.

The Osibisa spirit of delivering criss-cross rhythms that explodes with happiness was obviously present but everyone ended up with sounds floated on infectious reggae rhythms. It was thrilling to experience all the varied reggae punches that were employed to ‘lively up’ the songs.

The audience enjoyed the night and sang along to almost all the songs. Popular reggae deejay, Santino, was there and said he was completely blown away by the show.

He felt that with adequate sponsorship, Live Covers could grow into a big monthly celebration of great recording artistes and reggae music in a slightly bigger venue.

Knii Lante and his Deluge Entertainment crew could not immediately say which prominent artiste would be tackled for September. Sections of the audience, however, suggested names such as Fela Anikulapo Kuti, A. B. Crentsil and Jimmy Cliff.

The Live Covers programme was sponsored by Grace Kennedy Foods and Oblong Beer.
