National Theatre marks World Poetry Day with Ayawaso North Municipal basic schools
The Maamobi District Church of Pentecost came alive with colour and creativity on March 25, 2026, as it hosted a lively World Poetry Day celebration spearheaded by the National Theatre of Ghana in partnership with the Ayawaso North Municipal Education Directorate.
The event brought together pupils from basic schools across the municipality, offering them a platform to showcase their poetic talents.
Ahead of the celebration, selected pupils participated in a workshop where experienced poets guided them through the art of writing poetry.
The session equipped them with essential techniques and literary tools, helping them craft meaningful and expressive pieces.
Delivering the welcome address, Acting Executive Director of the National Theatre, Mr. Henry Herbert Malm, encouraged the pupils to develop a lasting passion for poetry, highlighting its power to inspire and transform lives.

He urged them to make poetry a habit, setting the tone for a day filled with creativity and expression.
The event celebrated Ghana’s rich poetic tradition, with pupils confidently reciting both classic and contemporary works.
Their performances captivated the audience, as teachers, fellow pupils and National Theatre staff watched with admiration.
Beyond the performances, the celebration served as a nurturing ground for young talent, giving budding poets the confidence to explore and express themselves through words.
Mr. Malm’s message echoed throughout the event, reinforcing the importance of embracing poetry as part of everyday life.

This year’s World Poetry Day theme, “Poetry for Peace and Unity,” underscores the role of poetry in fostering harmony, creativity and inclusion.
The National Theatre’s initiative forms part of a broader effort to promote linguistic diversity, artistic expression and social cohesion through the arts. As part of its calendar, the Theatre will also mark World Theatre Day on March 27 and World Dance Day on April 29.
