The 2002-year group of the St Mary’s Old Girls Association (SMOGA) will stage a fundraising production of I Do, I Don’t, a play by Ghanaian playwright Uncle Ebo Whyte, at the National Theatre in Accra on Saturday, October 17.
The initiative, organised in partnership with Roverman Productions and Joy FM, seeks to raise funds to refurbish the science laboratory at St Mary’s Senior High School.
The project is part of the year group's efforts to give back to their alma mater by supporting improvements to facilities that can enhance students’ learning and practical skills in science.
Through the production, the group hopes to bring together theatre lovers, former students, families and corporate supporters to contribute to the school's development while enjoying a live theatrical performance.
At the centre of I Do, I Don’t is Abena Ackon, a woman caught between competing demands from different parts of her life.
Her boss wants answers, her colleagues pile on the pressure, her husband expects the impossible, and her mother-in-law adds to her troubles. Even the pastor’s prayers appear to complicate matters rather than offer relief.
The play explores the pressures of work, marriage and family relationships, as well as the struggle to maintain one's identity amid the expectations of others.
With its focus on everyday dilemmas and human relationships, the production offers audiences an opportunity to reflect on the challenges that arise when personal desires clash with social and family expectations.
The play will be staged twice on Saturday, October 17, with performances scheduled for 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. at the National Theatre in Accra.
