Two African sustainable fashion brands join #FASHIONGIVES

With only 1.9 percent of charitable giving in the USA going to women’s and girls’ organisations, #FASHIONGIVES is committed to empower female founders that are transforming fashion as a force for good.

The Fashion Impact Fund, a New York City-based charitable organisation, is partnering with global brands and retailers to donate a percentage of sales proceeds to support grants to female founders advancing sustainable fashion through education, media, and workforce development programs.

The inaugural edition of the Fashion Impact Fund’s #FASHIONGIVES campaign consists of 18 partners from 10 countries including two brands from Africa; Lunar Clothing in South Africa and Omina Otsieno in Kenya.

Lunar Clothing

Lunar Clothing offers fashionable, eco-friendly designer clothing that integrates seamlessly into clients' everyday lives and allows them to effortlessly stay ahead of the trends year after year.

The brand is committed to having all of its clothes manufactured in South Africa by women under equitable and uplifting conditions.

Omina Otsieno is a conscious jewellery brand offering sustainable jewellery made from banana fibres. The brand's products address three issues: the environment, rural women's unemployment, and the preservation of indigenous sustainable cultures.

A recent recipient of the Fashion Impact Fund grants includes The African Academy of Fashion, led by Pauline and Tamburai Chirume of ONEOFEACH, an academy that focuses on practical and hands-on training using the African Fashion Curriculum, a first of its kind, to equip participants with the fundamental principles, techniques, knowledge, and a set of start-up tools that will enable them to utilise the rewarding skills of constructing garments and accessories from start to finish in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The duo have trained over 100 women since 2019 and helped to place 60 percent of them in employment in the fashion industry and continue to provide ongoing support for graduates who now enter the workforce fully prepared and equipped for the world beyond the programme.

Kerry Bannigan, Executive Director, Fashion Impact Fund, shares: “I am grateful for #FASHIONGIVES partners who are committed to our mission to accelerate women's economic empowerment and leadership as female founders in fashion are trailblazing initiatives that are addressing the critical issues of our time. Thank you to GivingTuesday for highlighting #FASHIONGIVES as a key campaign and understanding that fashion plays a critical role in achieving a sustainable future."

“GivingTuesday inspires people all around the world to embrace their power to drive progress around the causes they care about, not just on one day but throughout the year.” said Asha Curran, GivingTuesday’s CEO, and co-founder.

“With country and community leaders, millions of organizations, and countless givers of all kinds, GivingTuesday is creating a shared space where we can see the radical implications of a more generous world.”

Every act of generosity counts. Beyond purchasing with purpose from the campaign brand partners, other ways to support #FASHIONGIVES includes:
Donate: Together we give. Your generosity empowers women's lives by providing grants to female founders that are transforming fashion as a force for good. Our grants also support job training to provide skills and experience to accelerate women's economic empowerment and leadership.

Share: Giving is not just about making a donation. It is about making a difference. Spread the word by sharing our social media assets with your family, friends and community to encourage them to support us and help others.

Gift: Spread kindness by gifting somebody a pre-loved piece from your wardrobe that you no longer wear. Take a pic and include #FASHIONGIVES. You can also donate clothing to your local thrift/charity shop to extend its life, share the joy of your fashion choices and save clothing from landfill.
