Government will pay compensation for land – Sipa Yankey
The Ghana National Gas Company (Ghana Gas) has assured the people of Asemnda, Anoche and Atuabo that using the company’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme as a basis, the needs of the communities will be tackled to bring some comfort to the people.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Ghana Gas, Dr George Adjah-Sipa Yankey, gave the assurance. He further promised the three communities that the government would, in due course, pay compensation for their land acquired for the gas project.
He said that when he led a management team from Ghana Gas to meet with the elders and people of the three communities, all in the Nzema East District in the Western Region.
According to Dr Yankey, the rehabilitation of some major roads in the area will continue, while school infrastructure in the communities will be markedly improved.
He said the ongoing provision of teaching and learning materials to the various schools in the communities would be enhanced, while brilliant needy schoolchildren would be given scholarships to enable them to further their education.
He, therefore, urged parents in the communities to encourage their children to learn hard, so they could benefit from the presence of the Ghana Gas Company and other projects situated in the area.
Dr Yankey said although compensation had been paid to farmers whose lands were affected by the gas project, the company would still give financial support to those project-affected farmers who might want to engage in trading as a complement to their livelihood.
The elders of Asemnda and Anoche, in separate interactions with the team from the Ghana Gas Company, mentioned the construction of a palace as a priority. They said if their wish was fulfilled, it would go a long way to cement cordial relations between the gas processing company and the people.

An elder of Asemnda, Mr Kojo Antwi Aboagye, said it was important that a palace was built for the village “for the sake of posterity and generations yet unborn”. He added that besides the palace, the community would appreciate it if the road from Atuabo to Asemnda was reconstructed.
In addition, elders of the two communities appealed for employment opportunities for the youth, provision of scholarships, expansion of the Atuabo Clinic to serve the three communities and teachers’ residences for the local schools.
Dr Yankey acknowledged the demands and said the company would include them in its future CSR budget.
He asked persons in the three communities who were qualified to work with the Ghana Gas Company to apply through its Community Relations Office for consideration.
