Homeward Bound:Farewell Mrs. Margaret Safo

Departed comrade!

Thou, redeemed from pain

Shall sleep the sleep that kings desire in vain:

Not thine the sense of loss

But lo, for us the void

That never shall be filled again.

Not thine but ours the grief.

All pain is fled from thee.

And we are weeping in thy stead;

Tears for the mourners who are left behind

Peace everlasting for the quiet dead.

“Departed comrade”
by Lucretius, Roman epic poet and philosopher (ca 94 - 55BC)

Some eleven years ago, Mrs. Margaret Safo asked me to do an article for a column in the Mirror. Never did it cross my mind that she had in mind to set me up to be a regular contributor. Well, I quickly put together something for her, she read through and said, “this is good, we can use it.” The next day she called again and said, “Uncle Raphael, can you do some more for us?” I obliged and today I am still doing some more.

She always called my name with a slang and insisted on calling me Uncle Raphael even though she is several years older. This has been the trend since I encountered her humble persona in 1990 when I was been introduced to her as a potential brother-in-law. She received me with her angelic smile and welcomed me with such warmth.

Not that I don’t have much to say about her, but that all the tributes I have read about her since her demise confirmed that she is one consistent person in character. What younger people say about her is so consistent with what her friends, relations and all others say. I know Mrs. Margaret Safo would want every one to keep memories of her in their hearts so she really touched the hearts of many by her love and benevolence.

Rest in peace Maggie Peggy

Live forever Maggie in our hearts.

My personal condolence to Mr. Kojo Safo, the children and entire family.
