Making the earth a better place

April 22 was World Earth Day. Observed globally every year, the occasion is used to engage in environmental events and activities geared towards making the earth a healthy place to live.

It is also a time to engage communities and environmentally-friendly organisations on what to do to preserve the earth for generations yet unborn.

This year’s celebration marks the 45th anniversary of the day, and the United Nations (UN) has envisaged that it “could be the most exciting year in environmental history.” 

Although many countries and environmental organisations around the world celebrate the day with a variety of festivals and events, Ghana seems relatively quiet on the celebration.

Gaylord Nelson, a Senator from Wisconsin in the United States of America (USA), is credited with the conception of the day. 

He was worried about the rate of industrialisation and the careless attitude of people towards the environment.
