Superstition: hindrance to our forward march

Nine years ago, there was a mad rush towards the Accra Central Police Station. Both vehicular and human traffic, as well as trading activities in some parts of the Central Business District came to a standstill.

A rumour had emerged that a kayayoo had turned into a chicken after she picked a coin from the ground and the chicken had been sent to the police station. No one could tell the source of the rumour but many people headed for the police station to have a look at that human-chicken.

The rumour spread very far and engulfed many, including pickpockets, hawkers and loiterers who charged to the police station. The police had to call in reinforcement to keep the excited crowd at bay.

That chicken story turned out to be a phantom.

Very recently, another kayayoo story resurfaced.

This time a kayayoo was said to have been arrested by the police for carrying two human heads and was sent to the police station. And this time too there was the usual
