It forms part of the Complementary Basic Education (CBE) project known as Reaching and Teaching Out of School (REACH) aimed at encouraging school dropouts between the ages of eight and 14 to gain some formal education.

It is designed for the poorest districts in the Volta, Northern and Upper West regions.

In all, 90,000 children have been earmarked for the CBE classes and a minimum of 70 per cent of the graduates will transit into formal primary schools.

The Volta Region has so far registered 292 classes in five districts in the Nkwanta North, Nkwanta South, Krachi West, Hohoe and Jasikan districts with a total of 2,933 girls and 4,039 boys being enrolled.

Plan International supports the pupils with all learning and teaching materials and their facilitators who are recruited from the community are trained to instruct children in their local languages.

In an interaction with some pupils at Jasikan and Likpe Bakwa, the Volta Programme Unit Manager of Plan International, Mrs Rose Beyuo-Siilio, advised the young  girls among the learners to abstain from premarital sex since pregnancy  could ruin  the prospects of their education  completely.

The Head of Administration and Finance of the Ghana Education Service (GES) at the Jasikan district office, Mr Moses Chamba, thanked Plan International for the support and pledged the continuous support of the GES for the project.

He encouraged learners to make good use of the opportunity and make the best out of it. He also asked the CBE committee to help in maintaining and ensuring that the leaners did not drop out of the CBE classes.

Classes for the learners will be organised five days in a week for three hours each day, during which period the learners will be taken through literacy, numeracy and life skills for nine months. After the nine months programme, the children will be transited into mainstream schools in their communities.
