Born at 22 weeks: Baby returns home after becoming hospital’s youngest surviving infant

A baby is home for the first time after spending over 100 days in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

On Thursday, April 16, the King's College Hospital in Dubai, UAE, announced that a baby girl named Talia, "born at just 22 weeks," was finally released from their care.

"Weighing only 400 grams and spending 129 days in our NICU, baby Talia’s journey is nothing short of extraordinary," read a statement on their Facebook page.

"Born at the very edge of viability," it continued, "Talia’s care required precision, resilience, and a team dedicated to achieving more than survival, but the best possible quality of life. Today, Talia is home...stronger, thriving and surrounded by love."

Gulf News reported that Talia was born on Nov. 17, 2025 (World Prematurity Day) at 22 weeks, a gestation period at which, according to a recent Stanford study, only 28 per cent of babies survive.

She was born inside the amniotic sac during a "complicated" delivery and needed "intubation and advanced breathing support."

The outlet also noted that she "showed high infection markers" and that her skin was "delicate and transparent" and not all of her features had been developed.

Fortunately, Talia slowly gained weight and got stronger with each passing day, and was released from the NICU after nearly five months of intense care.

“This was a baby born at the very limits of what is considered viable,” Dr. Maria Theresa Reyes, a Consultant Neonatologist who cared for Talia, told Gulf News.

“Every step required precision, experience, attention to detail, anticipatory management, and constant reassessment.”

In a comment on the hospital's Facebook post, Talia's mother, Jade Gacera Cubillo, wrote, "We are forever grateful to all our prayer warriors who lifted our precious baby up in prayers, & of course to the incredible NICU doctors & nurses who cared for her with love & dedication - special mention to Dr. Maria Theresa and Dr Hari."

"You have truly been instruments of hope & healing in our lives," she added. "Our baby’s story is more than a journey for us - it is a testimony of faith, hope & miracles."
