Ho's ‘Oxygen City’ reputation threatened by growing filth, neglect

For years, Ho, the Volta Regional capital, was renowned for its clean streets and pristine neighbourhoods, earning it the nickname "Oxygen City of Ghana." However, the recent surge in filth in certain areas of the municipality is significantly eroding Ho's esteemed reputation.

One glaring example is the alarming overflow of rubbish beside the Horluviefe communal toilet in Ho-Bankoe. This problem has persisted for several months, with the filth now encroaching upon nearby residential properties. The nauseating sight and the foul odour emanating from the site, located next to the Ho-Bankoe E.P. Basic School has become a nuisance and a potential health hazard for the area.

During a visit by The Mirror last Wednesday, many residents had temporarily abandoned their homes to escape the unbearable stench and discomfort. Some residents expressed their frustration, noting that repeated appeals to the Municipal Assembly to address the issue had been ignored. Meanwhile, the garbage continues to accumulate at an alarming rate.

An elderly resident from Ho-Bankoe even sought assistance at The Mirror's office in hopes of finding a solution to the problem. It was discovered that the stench from the rubbish often infiltrates nearby classrooms, causing further disruption. Despite numerous attempts, The Mirror was unable to reach the Municipal Chief Executive, Richard Bosson, for comment at the time of reporting.

The accompanying image showcases the mountainous heap of garbage, emphasising the severity of the situation.
