New soundtrack album in the offing for Ama film

Music greatly lifted the original 1991 film shot in England and Ghana and many started paying attention to the movie after hearing some of the materials from the separately released soundtrack album.

The song collection strongly highlighted the conducive relationship between sound and visuals.

The journey of the new soundtrack started with singer Naana Blu doing a fresh rendition of the title song written by Kwesi Owusu and Vico Mensah, a former Osibisa bassist.

Naana Blu is obviously one of the fastest-rising music acts in this country and her inclusion in the Ama project is likely to pull in a new cache of audience.

Her management team is receptive to the idea of her doing another version of what she recently recorded for the film, to be included in the soundtrack album.

“The new soundtrack album does not necessarily have to contain only the tracks in the film.

We are reaching out to some of the young, imaginative beats makers in the system now so it could be an interesting compilation of work from a variety of sources for both old and young,” said Kwesi Owusu, one of the film’s directors who also wrote the script for the film, Ama.

An eight-track album of songs was put out when the film was first released. In addition to the Ama song, the other pieces were  So Great (To Be in Love), Treat Me Right, This is African Time, Kpanlogo, Swing, Brother Joe and Aladura.

Performers on those tracks included Paulina Oduro and Billie Richardson (vocals), Vico Mensah (guitar, bass and keyboards), Ray Ekow Otoo Allen (saxophone), Lindell Lewis (keyboards), Zimi Zeko (guitar) and the Adzido Dance Company.

Paulina Oduro sang on a number of the tracks on the original film and is available to contribute to the upcoming collection.

She is a vastly experienced singer comfortable with Jazz, Zouk, Reggae and Highlife.

Her inclusion will definitely add some of the required flavours, just like how the earmarked contemporary rappers will also bring their own charm to the project.

Apart from the new Ama’s world premiere scheduled for May 25 at this year’s New York African Film Festival, screenings have been planned for venues across the United Kingdom and also Ghana before the year ends.
