The Ghana Education Service (GES) has disclosed that the government has paid all outstanding arrears of the capitation grant to public basic schools across the country, covering the period from 2023 to date.
The payment was a clear demonstration of government’s commitment to the smooth operation and effective management of basic education in the country.
In a statement signed and issued by the Public Relations Officer of the GES, Daniel Fenyi, it was stated that the capitation grant remained a critical source of funding for basic schools, helping to support the purchase of teaching and learning materials, minor repairs and other essential management activities.
Commitment
“The payment reflects government’s strong resolve and practical support towards the smooth operation and effective management of basic education,” the statement said.
He explained that the timely release of the grant would enable heads of schools to deliver quality education with improved autonomy and accountability.
Mr Fenyi commended the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finance for prioritising the disbursement of the grant, particularly in the face of current economic challenges.
“We acknowledge and appreciate the efforts of the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finance for prioritising this payment despite the prevailing economic pressures,” it added.
Judicious use of funds
The service expressed gratitude to heads of basic schools for their patience and continued commitment to ensuring that teaching and learning continued uninterrupted, even during the period when funds were delayed.
It urged all school leaders to use the funds responsibly and in accordance with the approved guidelines for the utilisation of the Capitation Grant.
“Monitoring teams at the district and regional levels will intensify supervision to ensure compliance and value for money,” the statement added.
Mr Fenyi reaffirmed the service’s commitment to working with all stakeholders to improve learning outcomes, strengthen school management systems, and ensure the delivery of inclusive, equitable and quality education for every Ghanaian child.
