GTEC questions legitimacy of James Kofi Annan, Challenging Heights founder’s “Dr” title

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has formally raised concerns over the use of the academic title “Dr” by James Kofi Annan, founder of Challenging Heights, a non-profit organisation based in Accra.

In a letter dated June 19, 2025, the commission demanded clarity and documentation to substantiate Annan’s use of the title, citing potential misrepresentation.

The letter, signed by Prof. Augustine Ocloo, the Deputy Director-General (acting for the Director-General), stated, “The Commission wishes to formally express its concern regarding the use of academic titles that have not been duly earned or conferred through a recognized academic process.” GTEC emphasised that such usage, if unverified, could be “misleading and inconsistent with established academic protocols.”

Annan has been addressed as “Dr” in public forums and official communications, prompting GTEC to request specific details, including the awarding institution, whether the degree was earned or honorary, the date of conferment, and the process involved.

The commission warned that failure to provide the required evidence would necessitate the immediate discontinuation of the title across all platforms, including official documents, websites, and letterheads.

The letter concluded with an expectation of “full cooperation” and “prompt compliance,” underscoring GTEC’s commitment to upholding academic integrity.
