University Primary are spelling champions

The University Primary School from Cape Coast in the Central Region has emerged winners of the 2015 National Junior Graphic Fan Club Spelling Competition.

With 63 points, they beat the Falsyd Foundation School team in Accra, which placed second with 56 points, and took the trophy.

Kabore Basic School from Ho in the Volta Region, which were the defending champions, failed to retain the title this time when they placed third with 28 points, while the Family Life International School at New Achimota, Accra, came fourth with 15 points.

 

The contest was a prelude to the Junior Graphic fun fair as well as the 15th anniversary celebration of the paper which took place on Saturday, December 19, 2015 at the Lizzy Sports Complex at East Legon in Accra.

It was attended by dignitaries such as the Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Nana Oye Lithur; Nana Adwoa Awindor, a Queen and Television Personality and Professor Esi Sutherland Addy, a Professor of Literature at the University of Ghana.

For winning the contest, each of the three contestants from the University Primary School had a Play Station Four, a bank account with GH¢300 donated by Ecobank Ghana Limited, an Oxford Dictionary, souvenirs from Ecobank and MoneyGram, a carton of Peak Milk, a carton of Planet fruit drink and a certificate of participation. They also won for their school two white boards.

For placing second, each of the contestants from Falsyd Foundation School took home a suitcase, a GH¢300 bank account, souvenirs from Ecobank and MoneyGram,  a carton of Planet fruit drink, an Oxford Dictionary, as well as  a certificate of participation. Their school also won a white board.

Each of the contestants from Kabore School received a suitcase, a GH¢300 bank account, an Oxford Dictionary, a carton of Planet fruit drink, souvenirs from Ecobank and MoneyGram,  a certificate of participation while their school was also awarded a white board.

The contestants from Family Life International School received a suitcase, a GH¢300 bank account and an Oxford Dictionary each. They also got souvenirs from Ecobank and MoneyGram, a carton of Planet fruit drink, a certificate of participation and a notice board for their school.

Consolation prizes were presented to the semifinalists who were contestants from the Volta Barracks School, Ho; Palmer International School, Kumasi and the Elsie Lund School, Tamale.

The event was sponsored by Ecobank Ghana Limited, MoneyGram, Ghana the Book Trust, Voltic Mineral Water, Magic Malt, the Ghana Book Publishers Association, Peak Milk and Papaye.
