The assemblies were selected from the Western, Central, Greater Accra and Volta regions.

While the vehicles and motorbikes cost GH¢3.18 million, the computers are valued at GH¢333,584.

They were funded by the government, with support from the African Development Bank (AfDB).

The Minister of Trade and Industry, Dr Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, handed over the vehicles and equipment to representatives of the beneficiary assemblies at a ceremony in Kumasi.

Already, 31 pickups, motorbikes and computers have been presented to selected assemblies in the Northern, Upper East, Upper West, Brong Ahafo and Ashanti regions.

Making the presentation, Dr Spio-Garbrah said the government was focusing on policy initiatives that supported the creation of business opportunities, production and access to the necessary business development information to reduce poverty and create wealth.

In that connection, he said the government was promoting a number of interventions in the small and medium enterprises sector to create jobs and improve livelihoods in all the regions and districts.

Dr Spio-Garbrah said the government considered the expansion of opportunities for job creation and decent work critical to its agenda of building a better Ghana.

He said the government was of the firm belief that the full potential of the country could not be realised unless there was an all-inclusive approach towards rural development.

Rural Enterprises Programme

The Rural Enterprises Programme (REP) also provides the districts with funds to be able to deliver various business development services to potential and existing business operators.

For districts to benefit from the REP, they are required to demonstrate some commitment, including the establishment of a business advisory centre, in collaboration with the National Board for Small-Scale Industries (NBSSI).
