Abu Trica sues investigative bodies, FBI over 'unlawful' detention and interrogation in a GH¢10 million lawsuit

Frederick Kumi, a.k.a Abu Trica has filed a lawsuit against the Minister of the Interior and other investigative bodies over the manner in which he was arrested in December 2025, detained and interrogated during investigations.

The other bodies in his suit are the Narcotics Control Commission, the U.S Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) and the Attorney-General.

Frederick Kumi, better known on Snapchat as “Abu Trica”, was arrested in Ghana in December 2025 after United States authorities indicted him for allegedly helping to run a romance scam network that stole more than $8 million from elderly American victims.

His application for the enforcement of his fundamental human rights under Article 33 of the 1992 constitution was filed by his lawyer at the Human Rights Division of the High Court.

He is seeking compensation of GH¢10 million for the violation of his constitutional rights.

The suit is also against EOCO’s statement describing him as a “notorious cyber-criminal” and publicly portraying him as being involved in large-scale criminal activities and fraud without being convicted by any court of competent jurisdiction.

He alleged that, without access to a legal representative in an intimidating, coercive environment, without food and water, properties belonging to his clients were also seized, and he was compelled to disclose his passwords.

He contended that these acts prejudiced his right to be presumed innocent and to receive a fair hearing, adding that they were unlawful and violated his fundamental human rights to personal liberty, human dignity, and fair trial.

Reliefs

He wants the High Court to declare the acts, including his prolonged detention, questioning, and interrogation without a lawyer, among others, a breach of his fundamental human right to personal liberty, human dignity, fair trial, and therefore, unlawful and unconstitutional.

He also wants an order to exclude the information retrieved from him as inadmissible in any criminal, extradition, or administrative proceedings.

The applicant also wants an interlocutory injunction restraining the defendants from removing him from the jurisdiction before the final determination of the legality of his arrest, detention and interrogation.
