Ahead of 31st Watch Night: Police warns against fear-inducing prophecies and misinformation

The Ghana Police Service has issued a stern warning to the public, particularly faith-based organisations and individuals, to refrain from disseminating misinformation and fear-inducing prophecies as the nation prepares to usher in the new year.

In a press release signed by Assistant Commissioner of Police Grace Ansah-Akrofi, Director of Public Affairs, the Police cautioned against the publication of "misinformation and disinformation, including prophecies likely to cause fear and panic or endanger lives."

This advisory forms part of the Service's broader measures to maintain peace, security, and law and order during the 31st December crossover events and beyond.

Many faith-based organisations across the country will gather tonight to welcome the new year. In the past, some leaders of these organisations have used the occasion to make predictions about the coming year.

However, some of these predictions, particularly those concerning the deaths of prominent individuals, have drawn criticism from the authorities.

The Police statement highlighted the negative consequences of false information and panic-driven prophecies, which have the potential to disrupt public order, create unnecessary fear, and even pose threats to lives.

The warning aims to ensure that faith-based events and other social gatherings proceed peacefully without undue alarm.

While commending Ghanaians for their cooperation and support throughout the year, the Ghana Police Service reiterated its commitment to safeguarding public safety. Measures include intensified residential and highway patrols, traffic management at major intersections, and security at faith-based and social events nationwide.

The Police also assured the public that vital infrastructure across the country would be protected to prevent disruptions or security breaches.

As Ghana prepares to step into 2025, the Police encouraged everyone to contribute to maintaining peace and order, fostering a safe and harmonious environment for all.
