Akosombo Dam spillage victims, displaced Agavedzi residents get GH¢442.5 million in 2025 Budget allocation

In response to recent natural disasters in the country, the government has allocated GH¢242.5 million to support victims of the Akosombo dam spillage.

Additionally, GH¢200 million has been set aside to assist victims of the tidal wave disaster, which recently displaced residents of Agavedzi and surrounding communities in the Ketu South constituency.

The total support for victims of these two separate disasters amounts to GH¢442.5 million in the 2025 Budget allocation.

This was announced by the Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, during his presentation of the 2025 Budget in Accra on Tuesday, March 11.

"Mr Speaker, we have allocated GH¢242.5 million to support victims of the Akosombo dam spillage; we have also allocated an amount of GH¢200 million to support the victims of the tidal wave disaster that recently displaced residents of Agavedzi and surrounding communities in the Ketu South constituency," he said.

The Finance Minister further revealed that GH¢292.4 million has been allocated to begin the distribution of free sanitary pads to female students in primary and secondary schools.

In 2023, when the Akosombo Dam was opened to release excess water, it led to the flooding of surrounding communities along the Volta River, displacing thousands of people, destroying homes, farmland, and infrastructure, and causing significant damage to local livelihoods.

The displaced residents of Agavedzi and surrounding communities refer to the individuals and families who were affected by the tidal wave disaster in the Ketu South constituency of Ghana.

The tidal waves, which hit the coastal areas, caused widespread destruction, particularly in Agavedzi and neighboring villages.

These natural disasters resulted in the displacement of many residents, as their homes, farmlands, and properties were destroyed or severely damaged by the rising waters.

The affected communities faced immense challenges, including loss of shelter, livelihood, and essential infrastructure.
