The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has begun a visitation exercise to inspect the cleanliness of properties and their surroundings.

It forms part of efforts by the assembly to achieve a clean city status.

At the commencement of the exercise last Monday, officials of the AMA, led by its Chief Executive, Mr Mohammed Nii Adjei Sowah, visited properties along the Independence Avenue.

Inspection

In all, 11 facilities, from the Ako Adjei Interchange area through to the Ridge Roundabout, were visited, including the residence of former President Jerry John Rawlings.

Five property owners were summoned by health officials for unkempt surroundings.

Those who had clean but unattractive environments were urged to add some beauty to their premises.

Mr Sowah explained that the stretch from the Afrikiko Restaurant through to the Ridge Roundabout served as the passage route to the Flagstaff House, hence the need to keep the area clean.

Recognition

Former President Rawlings, as well as four corporate entities, were honoured with a memento for their effort at keeping their surroundings clean.

The memento read: “The City of Accra recognises your continuous effort at ensuring a clean, beautiful environment and manicured surroundings.”

The corporate recipients were MTN, the Zenith Bank, the World Bank and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in West Africa.

Those that were issued with notices included the Barclays Club House, the Information Services Department and some occupants of Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) bungalows.

Purpose

Mr Sowah explained that the exercise was aimed at ensuring a clean environment on the presidential corridor as the route was most travelled on by the President.

He added that similar exercises would be undertaken in other communities in the city in line with the vision of the government to make the metropolis the cleanest city in the sub-region.

Concern

He expressed concern over the poor attitude of some residents towards sanitation and called on the media and other stakeholders to intensify their campaign on environmental cleanliness.

He also entreated the people to embrace the concept of keeping their respective surroundings clean at all times.

Support

For his part, President Rawlings pledged to support the AMA in its fight against insanitary practices in the capital.

He said practices such as indiscriminate littering affected the country negatively and urged the AMA to continue in its effort at ensuring strict adherence to prevailing sanitation laws in the country.

“When you cannot change people’s habits, change the environment and make them respond to it.  This will bring about a social sense of responsibility and restore the sense of discipline that we used to be associated with,” he stated.
