The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs is to partner the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) and the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) to provide live coverage of General Assembly and Town Hall meetings of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) across the country.
The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, announced the initiative in a social media post issued on Tuesday, September 15, 2026.
He said the initiative was intended to promote transparency, accountability and citizen participation in local governance and was being implemented in line with the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936).
“Together, we can build more transparent, accountable and responsive local institutions,” Mr Ayariga said.
The announcement followed a meeting Mr Ayariga held at the Ministry on Monday, September 14, 2026, with stakeholders to discuss measures to deepen public engagement in the District Assembly process.
Under the arrangement, GBC is to provide live coverage of the meetings to broaden public access to local governance proceedings, particularly for citizens who are unable to attend the meetings in person.
The Ministry also said 51 pickup vehicles were expected to be procured and distributed among the Regional Spatial Planning Committees, the NCCE and GBC to help address logistical challenges involved in reaching assemblies across the country.
Mr Ayariga said the initiative was expected to generate greater public interest in the upcoming District-Level Elections and encourage more citizens to take part in the country’s decentralisation process.
He also stressed the need for measures to generate greater public interest in Assembly meetings.
Mr Ayariga, a lawyer and Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, was sworn in as Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs on August 29, 2026.
He took over the portfolio from Ahmed Ibrahim, who was reassigned to the Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources.
Mr Ayariga previously served as Minister of Information and Minister of Youth and Sports under the first Mahama administration.
The Ministry did not give a date for the commencement of the live broadcasts.
