AMA establishes education support fund for children of fishermen
The Chief Executive of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has announced the creation of a dedicated education support fund for children of farmers and fishermen in the metropolis.
The initiative, he said has a seed money GH¢20,000 donated by the Member of Parliament for the Odododiodioo Constituency, Alfred Nii Kotey Ashie.
The intervention, launched at the 41st National Farmers and Fishers’ Day celebration held at the forecourt of the AMA on Friday (December 5), was aimed at recognising the indispensable role of farmers and fishermen in national development while ensuring that their children have access to school fees, scholarships and other educational support.
Mr Allotey explained that the fund has been designed to provide targeted assistance so that no child would be denied education due to the nature of their parents’ work or income levels.
He noted that beyond providing relief, the initiative seeks to make farming and fishing more appealing to the younger generation by demonstrating that such professions can secure a dignified and hopeful future.
Addressing the media after the launch, the MCE said the intervention aligns with the broader support being offered to farmers by the government under President John Dramani Mahama. He stated that the AMA was complementing the national vision by offering practical support to the children of farmers and fishermen within the city.
