AMA honours illustrious sons, women of Accra

The Chief Executive of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), Mr Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije, who is also the President of World Mayors and Leaders of Africa and of African Descent, has held a ball and an awards night to honour illustrious men and women in Accra.

The event, dubbed “Mayor’s Ball 2015,” was also to recognise and appreciate the selfless service and dedication of past chief executives of the Accra Metropolis, as well as staff members of the assembly.

Among the individuals awarded were Mr Enoch Teye Mensah, Mr Nunoo Amarteifio, Mr John Saaka Addo, Justice V.C.R.A.C Crabbe, Oberempong Nii Kojo Ababio V, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Shaributu, Chief Imam, and Mr Azumah Nelson.

Also, a 112-year-old woman, Madam Nora Nortey Nartey, who was among the first batch of matrons of the Achimota School, was awarded. Some staff members of the assembly were also awarded, including Chief Okine.

Speaking at the event, Mr Vanderpuije said as a nation, we should uphold the need for all to appreciate the roles individuals played in ensuring the socio-economic development of the nation, hence the awards.

He mentioned that both past and present staff members of the AMA had put in their efforts through thick and thin in ensuring that there was massive infrastructural development to make life comfortable for people in the metropolis.

Outlining some development achievements, he and his team of assembly members had chalked up over the years, he stated that 107 Millennium City schools had been constructed to ensure quality education, roads and drains,  a waste plant, 13 markets, and the Millennium City Complex to house the AMA and the CONTI Project.

He paid glowing tribute to the staff of the assembly for their dedicated services and commitment to duty.

A High Court judge, Mr Justice John Ajet-Nasam, who represented the Chief Justice, Mrs Justice Georgina Theodora Wood as the Guest of Honour, said that the ball and the awards came at an opportune time since a nation that failed to honour its heroes was not worth dying for.
