Be conversant with traffic regulations - Drivers advised

Drivers have been advised to be conversant with road traffic regulations to help reduce road casualties.

Giving the advise at a graduation ceremony for 200 drivers in Accra, the President of the Ghana National Association of Driving Schools (Ghanadrive), Rev. Erasmus Amankwah Addo, stressed that road traffic regulations, the highway code and road signs, must be every drivers guide.

The 200 drivers who had undergone training with member institutions of Ghanadrive, were also honoured for displaying safe driving skills.

Rev. Addo said drivers played an essential role in ensuring road safety for which reason they had to drive with care and comply with all road traffic regulations.

On a daily basis, he said it was a must for the driver to inspect his car to ensure there was sufficient fuel in the tank, the radiator was filled with water, the engine oil level and all fluid levels were adequate and the vehicle was clean and tidy.

“Drivers must be cautious and show courtesy to pedestrians and the driving public,” he added.

Code for driver instructors

Rev. Addo said the association had developed a code of conduct for certified driver-instructors to ensure they were abreast of driving regulations and also to ensure that registered driving schools provided efficient client services.

He explained that the code of conduct ,which spelt out the responsibilities of driver instructors, also stated the sanctions for instructors who failed to comply with the rules and regulations stipulated by the code.

The disciplinary sanctions for recalcitrant driver instructors, he said included warning, suspension, interdiction or summary dismissal.

Among others, the code stated that though the gravity of the offence shall determine the punishment, in case of serious breach warranting termination of appointment of the instructor, the Driver Vehicle and Licensing Authority and the Ghanadrive must be notified.
