Cassava thief fined GH¢600

The Agona Swedru Magistrate Court, presided over by Mr Kwaku Baah Frempong, has imposed a fine of  GH¢600 on a cassava thief, Isaac Gyandoh, 21.
The court convicted Gyandoh on his own plea of guilty to the charge of stealing.

Gyandoh will serve a three-month jail term with hard labour in default of the fine, the court ordered.

The stolen cassava, worth GH¢120, belonged to one Albla Arko, 40.

Sergeant Maxwell Boadu said the complainant, Arko, is a farmer at Bebianeha, near Awutu Bawjiase and Gyandoh is also a farmer based at Odumase, near Awutu Obrakyire.

He said on May 27, 2013 at about 2 p.m. Arko visited her cassava farm at Akoninsim village with her son, Jonas Osae, only to meet Gyandoh who had harvested a sack full of cassava valued at GH¢120 from her farm.

Sergeant Boadu said when Arko questioned Gyandoh as to why he had come to harvest her cassava, he (Gyandoh) could not give any tangible explanation except to say that he came there to inspect the cassava and evaluate it for sale.

The prosecutor said that explanation did not go down well with Arko and her son who caused Gyandoh’s arrest.

He said Gyandoh admitted committing the offence in his caution statement and was accordingly charged for court.
