The seminar, which was on the theme, “What the youth need to succeed: the entrepreneurial perspective,” was targeted at over a 100 youth in the national capital.

It exposed participants to the relevant skills needed to be employed on the job market.

The annual seminar, organised by the Church of Christ, offered the participants the opportunity to break into various groups to discuss how they could contribute to solving the challenges of unemployment in the country and also focus on health issues concerning the youth.

Featuring resource persons from academia, the church and professions on the job market, the seminar also had the participants engaging in a Bible quiz and visiting interesting sites in Accra.

Concerns of unemployment

In his address, the facilitator of the programme, Dr Wisdom Kpehor, expressed grave concern about the current unemployment rate across the globe.

Dr Kpehor, who is also the Managing Director of the Good Shepherd International School Limited, attributed the unemployment rate among the youth to lack of skills.

According to him, employers usually expressed concern about the lack of skills by the youth and said the workshop was meant to address those challenges.

“Being in the youthful age, you should define who you are and what you can do before you come out of school.

“Due to the unavailability of jobs the youth who struggle to be employed are thrown into jobs they do not prefer but tend to do them anyway and anyhow,” he said.

Role of the church

In contributing to the reduction in unemployment, Dr Kpehor urged the church to play a central role in creating jobs for the teeming youth in the country in order to reduce the burden on the government.

He also charged them to undertake socio-economic activities to empower the poor and reduce poverty.

The Managing Director of the Village of Hope, Mr Amos A. Asuma-Karikari, advised the youth to venture into vocational skills since there were a lot of opportunities in that sector.

He also took the participants through the use of some equipment and materials which had been manufactured by the inmates of the institution, and encouraged them to venture into such areas to generate income.
