Akwaaba Magic launches 5th anniversary
Ghanaian digital satellite and general entertainment channel, Akwaaba Magic, has officially launched its 5th anniversary with a renewed promise to deepen investment in authentic Ghanaian storytelling.
The launch, held on Monday at the MultiChoice Ghana head office, brought together key industry players, including actors, directors, producers, technical crew and new talents, to celebrate five years of what many describe as a game-changing platform for local content on DStv.
Speaking at the event, Head of Channel for Akwaaba Magic, Nosisa Doe, reflected on the channel’s humble but bold beginnings.
“Today, we reflect on a journey that began on the 8th of March, 2021, when we launched this channel right in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic. Amidst the challenges, our vision was clear to create a premium platform dedicated entirely to Ghanaian stories.”
According to her, the channel was created to fill a long-standing gap in Ghana’s media space.
“Before our launch, filmmakers and producers had long sought a stable, high-quality exhibition platform for local content — a space where Ghanaian stories, languages and talents could shine consistently. Akwaaba Magic rose to meet that need, becoming the home of 100% Ghanaian storytelling on DStv and GOtv,” she stated.
Over the past five years, the channel has aired a wide range of productions, including dramas and reality shows.
Backing her words with numbers, Ms Doe revealed that the channel has produced 621 hours of drama series, 268 episodes of reality shows, 32 movies and 1,075 hours of telenovelas, excluding thousands of licensed hours from independent Ghanaian producers.
One of the channel’s most celebrated achievements, she noted, is its commitment to language and cultural authenticity.
“We have ensured that our stories remain relatable and rooted in our cultural identity by showcasing productions in Twi, Ga, Ewe, Fante and other Ghanaian languages. This approach has strengthened the connection between our viewers and their heritage,” she said.
She added that beyond entertainment, the channel has played a stabilising role in the industry during difficult times.
“As acknowledged by several industry voices, Akwaaba Magic has provided a lifeline for Ghanaian film and television, supporting producers and keeping production activity alive when the industry’s momentum was at risk,” she said.
The channel has also partnered with major events, including the Ghana Music Awards and the Ghana DJ Awards, helping to showcase Ghanaian excellence locally and across the continent.
Looking ahead, Ms Doe assured stakeholders that the next phase of the channel will see deeper investments and wider collaboration.
“The next chapter of Akwaaba Magic will see deeper investments in local productions, wider collaboration across the creative value chain, more opportunities for emerging talent and innovative content that reflects the evolving face of Ghanaian storytelling. To everyone who has been part of this five-year journey, thank you. Your creativity, passion and support are the magic behind Akwaaba Magic.”
Also addressing the gathering was Deputy Executive Secretary of the National Film Authority, James Gardiner, who commended the channel for transforming Ghana’s film and television ecosystem.
“We not only commemorate five years of dedicated storytelling, but we acknowledge the profound impact this channel has had on our nation’s film and television ecosystem,” he said.
According to him, the channel has gone beyond its original mandate.
“Five years ago, Akwaaba Magic emerged with a bold mission to provide a home for authentic Ghanaian stories told by Ghanaian voices. Today, we can confidently say that this mission has not only been fulfilled, but very much exceeded.”
He exhorted the channel’s consistent investment in original productions, noting that it has energised the industry and created jobs.
“The National Film Authority applauds your role as a catalyst for growth. Your investment in original productions has built confidence among creatives who have long sought dependable distribution avenues,” he said.
Mr Gardiner further described Akwaaba Magic as “not just a broadcaster, but a true partner in national creative development,” adding that its collaborations with local production houses and technical crews align perfectly with the NFA’s mandate to build a sustainable and globally competitive film ecosystem.
As part of the anniversary celebrations, a number of activities have been lined up.On March 8, there will be an All-Women Panel discussion on Women in Production at 6:00pm, followed by the on-air premiere of a new title, Bediatuo, at 7:00 pm.
