He was optimistic that the present predicament that had befallen the nation was only temporary and would be followed by major rebound of the economy.

"We need to determinedly stand as a people with a common destiny to exert every sinew of ours and prayerfully salvage Mother Ghana," he said.

Maulvi Salih was addressing Ahmadiyya Muslims who had defied the early morning rain to assemble at the Ahmadiyya Muslim Conference Centre at Ashongman near Accra to join  Muslims worldwide to celebrate the annual Eid-ul-Fitr festival.

The celebration, which marked the end of the 30-day Ramadan fast, was also to thank Allah for His mercies and seek guidance and blessings for the coming year.

It is expected

Maulvi Salih said in the history of every nation or group of people there was a time that they had to encounter one challenge or another.

He said on some occasions the nature of those challenges was so devastating that it shook the very foundation of the nations and threatened their existence.

However, he said, such grim situations could serve as a catalyst for national mobilisation and development, adding that those trials and tribulations were a wake-up call to the people.

Maulvi Salih urged all Muslims to draw on the inherent values of the month of Ramadan and direct their attention towards the regeneration of the economy.

He also urged them to acknowledge the hand of Allah at work and turn to Him at all times, saying, "We need to sing His praises and beseech Him for salvation, much more in the face of our current predicament."

Minister of State

Speaking on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama, the Minister of State in charge of Public/Private Partnerships (PPP), Mr Rashid Pelpuo, lauded Muslims for their sacrifice and prayer for the nation.

He said the current economic hardships facing the country were only temporary, adding that the government was doing all it could to salvage the economy.

Mr Pelpuo asked Ghanaians to patronise made-in-Ghana goods at all times, while the government initiated plans to reduce imports into the country.
