Muslims in regions celebrate Eid-Ul-Fitr

Muslims from across the country yesterday marked Eid-ul-Fitr to signify the end of Ramadan, a month-long period of fasting.

In all the regions, large numbers of the Muslim faithful offered prayers to Allah for seeing them through a successful fast and for the peace of the country. 

Akwasi Ampratwum-Mensah and Andrews Tetteh report from Takoradi that the hundreds of Muslims who assembled at the Jubilee Park were led by the acting Imam of the Takoradi District, Umar Sabutey, to offer prayers to Allah for guiding the Muslim community to successfully conclude the Ramadan.

They also prayed for the prosperity of the President, his ministers and the nation at large.

The Western Regional Minister, Mr Paul Evans Aidoo, said religious tolerance had culminated in the peace the country was enjoying now. 

He said in the face of the current economic challenges confronting the nation, peace was the key to solutions.

The Upper East Regional Chief Imam, Sheikh Adam Yussif, also led prayers for peace and prosperity for the region and the  nation at the Jubilee Park in Bolgatanga, reports Vincent Amenuveve.

Alhaji Abdulai Abubakari, the Deputy Upper East Regional Coordinating Director, entreated Muslims to be tolerant and love one another.

A six-member delegation from the Navrongo-Bolgatanga Catholic Diocese called for unity among all religious bodies to promote peace and development and presented four cartons of soft drinks to the Chief Imam as part of their contribution towards the celebration.

From Wa, Emmanuel Modey reports that prayers were offered by the various Muslim sects at the Jubilee Park, led by the Upper West Regional Chief Imam, Dr Sulemani Bakuri, and the Wa Naa, Naa Fushini Seidu Pelpuo IV. 

Dr Bakuri prayed for peace, stability, prosperity, good health and understanding for the leaders and the people of Ghana and urged all to work toward the nation's progress.

He said although the nation was passing through turbulent times, with hard work, determination and togetherness, it would succeed.

In a message read on his behalf, the Upper West Regional Minister, Alhaji Amin Amidu Sulemani, exhorted Muslims to use the festivities to renew their faith and  strive to achieve peace and solidarity. 

Muslims commended prayers for peace

For Muslims in Sunyani, the Coronation Park was the venue for prayers and the turnout was massive, reports Kwame Asiedu Marfo.

Addressing the gathering, the Brong Ahafo Regional Minister, Mr Eric Opoku, commended them for the 30-day prayers they offered for the peace, unity and development of the country.

He said the Ramadan would bring blessings to the country and urged them to continue to pray for the peace and unity of the Brong Ahafo Region, as well as the country.

The Brong Ahafo Regional Chief Imam, Alhaji Umar Abdul Kadir, expressed appreciation to those who supported Muslims in respect of the celebration of the Eid-ul-Fitr.

From Koforidua, George Folley reports that the Eastern Regional Minister, Mr Antwi Boasiako-Sekyere, joined in the prayers at the Central Mosque, where the prayers were led by the Eastern Regional Chief Imam, Alhaji Yussif Amudani Suleimana. 

Addressing the Muslims, Mr Boasiako-Sekyere congratulated them on going through one month of fasting.

He urged them to continue to live in peace with their neighbours, as enshrined in the Quran, and gave an assurance that the government would continue to work hard to improve the living conditions of Ghanaians.

Zadok Kwame Gyesi also reports from the Central Region that the Regional Chief Imam, Sheikh Yusif Makalata, called on the government to include Muslim schools in the proposed 200 senior high schools to be built across the country.

He called on all Ghanaians to rally behind the President to enable him to fix the current economic hardships.

The Central Regional Minister, Mr Aquinas Tawiah Quansah, assured the Muslim community of government’s support and asked them to continue to pray for peace in the country.

From Tamale, Zakari Alhassan reports that the Chief Imam of the Central Mosque, Alhaji Ahmed Abdul-Salam, led the prayers and called for sustainable peace and prosperity in the country.

He urged parents not to shirk their responsibilities but invest in the education of their children to prepare them for a brighter future. 

In a speech read on his behalf, the Northern Regional Minister, Alhaji Limuna Muniru, commended Islamic scholars and their followers for their tolerance and endurance during the Ramadan and entreated them to let those virtues reflect in their daily lives.

The minister urged the youth to do away with ant activity that would reverse the development of the area and also jeopardise their future.
