According to sources, Corporal Eric K. Amoako of the Zongo Divisional Police, with service number 38865, was said to be part of a team that sold fake money to dealers and turned around to arrest them, took the fake currency and extorted money from them.

The three were arrested around 2 p.m. last Saturday when they tried to play their trick on a young man.

An accomplice of the corporal, Abdulai Mohamed, who was also arrested, tried selling to the complainant, Adusei, the fake currency with face value of GH¢22,500 for GH¢3,400.

Alarm

According to an eyewitness, just before the victim could accept the deal, Corporal Amoako, who is stationed at the Merchant Bank branch at Asafo but did not report for work, rushed to the scene and arrested the complainant and took his money and mobile phone,  together with the fake money.

Adusei, who did not understand what was going on, raised an alarm which attracted a large crowd to the scene who started subjecting the three, including the policeman, to severe beatings, a situation which made some people call in the police team.

A search on a Toyota Highlander vehicle belonging to the suspected policeman, with registration number GN 3741-14, revealed his identity crest.

Investigations also revealed that the corporal had not reported for work.

An accomplice of Corporal Amoako, Kwabena Osei, was also arrested.

Police PRO

When contacted, the Ashanti Regional Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Ibrahim Tanko, confirmed the arrest of the three but stated that the policeman had denied any involvement in the case.

He said Corporal Amoako was taken to hospital for treatment and added that the police command was investigating the story.
