Coronation of Nkoranzamanhene, Omanhemaa draws Easter crowds to Nkoranza

Nkoranza came alive on Easter Saturday as hundreds of residents and visitors thronged the Children’s Park to witness the coronation and outdooring of the Nkoranzamanhene, Nana Kwame Baffoe IV, and the Omanhemaa, Nana Yaa Sarpomaa III.

Amid the rhythmic sounds of fontomfrom drums, musket fire and ceremonial horns, the usually calm town was transformed into a vibrant display of culture and tradition, with many setting aside their Easter festivities to attend the historic ceremony.

Traditional authorities, political figures and residents of Nkoranzaman gathered under colourful canopies, while warriors and cultural troupes added grandeur to the occasion. The newly enstooled leaders were adorned in rich traditional cloth and elaborate jewellery, reflecting the significance of the event.

Agriculture and economic transformation

At the ceremony, Nana Baffoe outlined an ambitious vision centred on commercial agriculture and agro-processing, with a focus on key crops such as cashew, maize and yam.

He stressed the need for the area to move beyond raw production to value addition in order to create jobs and generate wealth locally.

“We will add value to what we produce. Let us no longer be just producers. Let us become creators of wealth,” he said.

He noted that although Nkoranzaman is endowed with fertile land and a hardworking population, its agricultural potential has yet to translate into sustained economic prosperity.

Nana Baffoe announced plans to engage government and private investors to establish commercial farms and agro-processing industries, while also promoting community farming and sustainable agricultural practices.

Development and education initiatives

The Nkoranzamanhene further revealed plans to establish a Nkoranzaman Development Fund to support brilliant but needy students to pursue higher education, particularly in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

He pledged to build partnerships aimed at improving access to quality education and healthcare across the traditional area.

In addition, he announced plans to launch the 2026 Munufie Kese Festival and a Nkoranzaman Homecoming initiative, which will be held annually to reconnect the diaspora, mobilise investment and promote tourism.

Call to unity and service

Reflecting on his coronation, Nana Baffoe described the occasion as a pivotal moment for the traditional area.

“This moment is more than a coronation. It is more than a tradition. It is a call to action, a call to service, a call to unity, progress and shared prosperity,” he said.

He also paid tribute to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, for his role in promoting peace and stability and mediating the Nkoranza chieftaincy process.

Nana Baffoe pledged to be “a leader for all, without exception”, emphasising that unity would be critical to the area’s future development.

Government support and traditional leadership

The Deputy Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, described the coronation as a symbol of renewal and hope for the people of Nkoranza.

She said the traditional area, known for its rich Akan heritage, had long served as a centre of trade, agriculture and culture, noting that its stool embodied the values and identity of the people.

Ms Sowah commended residents for maintaining peace over the past year, stating that “the prevailing calm has created an enabling environment for growth and development”.

She reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with traditional authorities, stressing that chiefs remain key partners in conflict resolution, community mobilisation and local economic development.

She urged the newly enstooled leaders to promote unity, champion development, and work closely with state institutions to advance progress in Nkoranzaman and the Bono East Region.
