Customers advised to use quality phones

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications (GCT), Mr Kwaku Sakyi-Addo, has appealed to mobile phone subscribers to avoid using substandard phones for their operations.

According to him, substandard phones were a major contributory factor to call drops in the country.

He said inferior or fake phones were usually composed of bad ear pieces and poor batteries, and as a result choked the network.

He made the appeal during a public forum organised by the GCT for the telecommunication industry in Ghana.

The programme brought together network operators, stakeholders and consumers to address the numerous concerns of customers.

Substandard phones

Mr Sakyi-Addo stated that about 25 to 30 per cent of substandard phones contributed to drop in calls, and it disallowed those with the appropriate phones to make calls.

He advocated that consumers used the right phones in order to avoid the above stated challenges, adding: “A proper phone does not mean an expensive one.”

“It is important to use genuine phones to avoid all these challenges,” he stressed.

To be able to determine a genuine mobile phone from a substandard one, he advised that one needed to dial (*#06H).

Concerns of consumers

Addressing some concerns of consumers, Mr Sakyi-Addo noted that it was inappropriate for customers to blame network operators for the use of their credits.

He said network operators did not “steal credit,” noting that different phones performed differently.

He indicated that smart phones came with various features which tended to attract a lot of credit, and stressed the need for consumers to make proper enquiries before using smart phones.
